Last Thursday, the country's leaders came together to celebrate the Republic of China's National Day at the Sea King restaurant.

In his key note address, Solomon Islands Prime Minister, Dr. Derek Sikua, acknowledged the continuous support by Taiwan towards the development of the Solomon Islands.

"Solomon Islands value its relationship with Taiwan and my government remains firmly committed to maintaining and further enhancing the mutual relation between the two countries.

"We are tremendously grateful for the help that Taiwan has given in the various sectors, especially towards our efforts to develop our rural areas and ensure that our people have a better quality of life," Dr. Sikua says.

He adds that Solomon Islands will "continue our unwavering support for Taiwan's bid for membership and participation in the United Nations and its specialized agencies."

He also highlighted that Solomon Islands is looking forward to hosting the Taiwan Pacific Allies Summit 2009 in Honiara.

According to Dr. Sikua, "this is an opportunity for Taiwan to cement its bilateral ties with other Pacific friends."
