Health authorities stated that as a normal practise, nurses will have to look after the patients in Lata while the search continues. Should there be an urgent need for a service to be provided by a Doctor, then the patient will be referred to the National Referral Hospital in Honiara.
Although there are currently two vacant positions for Doctors for the Lata hospital, only one has been filled by the Doctor who recently passed away. The other position has been vacant for more than six months already.
Since Solomon Islands is also facing a shortage of Doctors, it is also quite difficult to mobilize any Doctor immediately.
