The Solomon Islands Democratic Party plans to establish a national university at Fote in the central district of Malaita Province.

The party's 2010 policy on education states that the national university will not be based on Guadalcanal to 'ease the pressure off the province'.

Speaking at MASI's third Media Forum today, Party Leader Matthew Wale explains the Party's proposal to have the national university located at Malaita is only in response to concerns of Guadalcanal leaders to locate new national developments outside of the island.

Mr Wale, also the current caretaker Education Minister, however says that the proposal to have the country's first university located in Malaita is a future cabinet decision.
