Amid criticisms, Cook Islands is preparing for the 2009 Mini Games by looking at its available options.

According to Radio New Zealand International, the Cook Islands government is gathering information on facilities it needs to host the Mini Games. The country has had to re-look at its options as criticisms have come in on certain aspects of the preparations, such as the loan from China.
The loan, which was to be used on building a new US$4million stadium, has now been put on hold pending a new cost/benefit report and proper advice on how to proceed.

The other option that has been put forward to government is to upgrade existing facilities.

The Finance Minister, Sir Terepai Maoate, was reported as stating that the Cabinet believes the country has to be realistic and host an affordable Mini Games.
