The International Women's Day celebration is a worthwhile event not just for women but also for men and youths.

These were sentiments raised by the Lord Mayor of Honiara City, Andrew Mua. Mr. Mua said that in a country like the Solomon Islands, fighting for women's rights and recognition is worthy of praise.

Honiara Ciy Mayor, Andrew Mua, in his keynote address praised women for the continued efforts to fight for women's rights, equality and most importantly the fight to end violence against women.

He said men and youths should also team up in supporting women in their on-going campaign to end violence against women and girls.

Mr. Mua urged men and youths to also appreciate the role of women in society.

Meanwhile, the UNESCO General Director, Koichiro Matsuura, made a call on all UNESCO partners to intensify their efforts and commitment to achieving gender equality in education, the sciences, culture and communication and information, and to contributing to the sustainable future of our world.
