The Honiara City Mayor, Israel Maeoli has been ousted by his Council via no-confidence motion last week.

The Acting City Clerk, Charles Kelly confirms Maeoli's removal was made last Thursday after a full council meeting. He says the mayor was voted out on grounds of incompetency.

Meanwhile, the Acting City Clerk says the Council will begin arrangements to open nominations for a new mayoral elections.

Charles Kelly says the Council will officially notify the Ministry of Home Affairs of Maeoli's removal from office and get legal advice from the Attorney General's Chambers on the processes to elect a new mayor.

Kelly says the Council is looking forward to working together with a new elected mayor.

He adds the Council wants the new mayor to be elected soon to continue with the governance of the City Council.
