The local police force has changed its name back to the original Royal Solomon Islands Police.

Acting Police Commissioner, Peter Marshall, told a media conference yesterday that the government has endorsed a submission from police for a change of the organisation's name with immediate effective.

Mr. Marshall said that the RSIP was very pleased with the development.

He said that the name Royal Solomon Islands Police force was banned in 2006 following decisions by the Attorney General Office that "it is not appropriate" to call the Royal Solomon Islands Police force with the title 'Royal'. This saw the change of the organisation's name to the 'Solomon Islands Police Force'.

The submission for the name changed was discussed and ratified by Cabinet last week.
