The Government of Solomon Islands has been encouraged to set up separate scholarship funds for people with special needs.
The Divisional Coordinator of Special Education at the University of the South Pacific Joyce Heeraman said this in light of a new study program specifically designed for people with special needs now offered at the region's premier university."Now that USP offers a degree in special education, the government must ensure this often marginalised minority receive appropriate inclusive education training," she said.
Solomon Islands recently made commitments at the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in Geneva to advance issues for people with disabilities.
A spokesperson for the People with Disabilities Centre in Honiara say that this would be a great start in fulfilling governments' pledge.
