Australia has immediately pledged over SBD$330,000 to support Solomon Islands in the initial response to flooding in Honiara and Guadalcanal.

“Australia is ready to assist Solomon Islands at this difficult time,” said Australian High Commissioner Andrew Byrne.

“The Australian Government is providing more than SBD330,000 in emergency humanitarian assistance to support the Solomon Islands Government and local non-government organisations with logistics and emergency relief suppliesto assist in response to this disaster.

“We are also working closely with the National Disaster Management Office to assist with damage assessment.

“Australia will continue working closely with the Solomon Islands Government and donor partners in coming days to assess what further assistance may be required,” the High Commissioner said.

Solomon Islands has experienced heavy rain in the past 48 hours caused by a tropical low to the south of Guadalcanal. This has resulted in flooding around Honiara and the surrounding areas, forcing many people from their homes and causing significant damage to infrastructure.
