In Auki, law enforcement have seized a makeshift firearm, and an investigation is underway to locate a high-powered rifle that remains unaccounted for.

Subsequent to the apprehension of a 58-year-old male suspect at Kwikwisi village in the West Kwara’ae highlands on March 6, 2024.

The arrest and confiscation were facilitated by a community tip-off, indicating that the suspect, involved in illicit homebrew production, possessed an automatic rifle (SR88).

Provincial Police Commander (PPC) for Malaita Province, Superintendent Leslie Kili, disclosed that the police conducted a raid at the suspect's residence, successfully confiscating a handmade firearm; however, the automatic rifle was not found.

It is alleged that the suspect discharged two rounds from the SR88, posing a threat to his community.

Superintendent Kili further noted that during the arrest, the police discovered live rounds from World War II within the suspect's house.

Additionally, the suspect was found to be in possession of certain police properties. The suspect is currently in police custody in Auki, and efforts are underway to secure his remand as the investigation into the incident continues.
