A former Prime Minister, who is also the former Premier of Guadalcanal Province, has been sentenced to three and a half years imprisonment.

SIBC reported that the Central Magistrates Court, late yesterday afternoon, sentenced Ezekiel Alebua to three and a half years in prison. Magistrate John Myers convicted and sentenced Alebua yesterday for two counts of embezzlement, offences he committed whilst he held the office of Guadalcanal premier.

It has been revealed in Court that Mr Alebua committed the offences between February and May of 2001. The court also heard that Alebua had used more than 194-thousand dollars of Guadalcanal provincial government funds for personal gain.

Alebua was initially charged with eight counts of embezzlement, but the court had dismissed six counts. He received a total of 42 months in prison for the two counts of embezzlement.
