Solomon Islands Police Welcomes 114 New Constables

Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Jahir Khan and the Senior Executive of the Solomon Islands Police Force (SIPF) welcomed 114 new Constables in a ceremony held at the Police Club.

The 114 Probationary Constables have completed their two-year probation period after they were recruited in 2006. Eighty-two male and thirty-two female officers from Honiara, Kira Kira, Auki, Taro, Gizo, Tulaghi and Lata received their postings for the next phase of their policing career. The group of new Constables were addressed by the Commissioner of Police and all members of the SIPF Executive. Australia Sponsors Rugby Training Tour

The Solomon Islands Rugby Union Federation (SIRUF) has received an additional $27,500 in funding from the Australian High Commission, to continue programs developing rugby throughout Solomon Islands.

The Solomon Islands Rugby Outreach Project, supported by an Australian Sports Outreach Program grant, is providing refereeing and coaching courses for local rugby officials in Malaita, Western Province, Renbel, Makira, and Guadalcanal. The program, organised by SIRUF Development Officer Nick Hatigeva, provides training for coaches, referees and rugby administrators, to enhance the physical and technical development of rugby. Solomon Islander Participates in United States Programme

A Solomon Islander will participate in the United States International Visitor Program.

Program Officer with the National Disaster Management Office, Julian Maka'a, left the country on Saturday to participate in the "Planning for Crises: Disasters and Pandemics." Over the next three weeks, Mr. Maka'a will travel to the following cities in the United States: Washington, DC; Atlanta, Georgia; New Orleans, Louisiana; San Francisco, California; Honolulu, Hawaii. Pacific Nations Must Seize Opportunity to Prepare for Higher Food Prices

MANILA, PHILIPPINES - High oil prices are already a concern in the Pacific region, but the recent surge in world food prices has yet to be fully felt in the Pacific, according to a new Asian Development Bank (ADB) study, "Living with High Prices".

This lag between developments in mainland Asia and retail outlets in the Pacific provides a small window of opportunity to prepare for high food prices, according to the study prepared by ADB to help regional governments manage the adjustment to high prices. "Good government policy can maximize wins from high export prices and minimize the losses from higher prices of oil, rice and wheat," says Director General of ADB's Pacific Department, Philip Erquiaga. Spain's Ambassador to SI Officially Sworn in

The newly appointed Ambassador of Spain to the Solomon Islands, His Exceelency Antonio Casano, was today officially sworn in at the Government House by Acting Governor General, Sir Peter Kenilorea.

Speaking during the ceremony the Ambassador, HE Antonio Casano, stated that the two countries have enjoyed close relations after establishing diplomatic relations in the late 1980s. HE Casano also stated that Spain is very supportive of the developmental aspirations of the Solomon Islands.
