Sir Allan Kemakeza has been elected Speaker of the National Parliament.

Sir Allan Wins Speaker's Election Sir Allan won the election by 27 votes, surpassing the 25 votes required to win the Speakers seat. The other two candidates were Francis Billy Hilly and Fred Fono. Mr. Hilly polled 17 and while Mr. Fono polled 4. Sir Allan Kemakeza KBE, born 11 October 1950, has had extensive experience in national politics. He has represented Savo/Russel Constituency in the National Parliament of the Solomon Islands since 1989. He only recently lost his seat in the 2010 national general elections, held in early August. Solomon Islands will have a new Speaker of Parliament today.

Speaker's Election Underway Four candidates were nominated for the Speaker to National Parliament elections. The nominees are: former Temotu-Nende MP, Patteson Oti, former Simbo-Rannonga MP Francis Billy Hilly, former Savo-Russells MP and former Prime Minister Sir Allan Kemakeza and former Central Kwara'ae M-P and former Deputy Prime Minister, Fred Fono. Oti Likely Candidate for Speaker

The former Member of Parliament for Temotu Nende John Patteson Oti is a likely candidate for the Speaker of Parliament's election on Wednesday.

Reports from the Sunday Isles Newspaper said it is possible the newly formed Coalition Government led by Prime Minister Danny Philip will nominate Mr Oti as their candidate. According to sources Mr Oti has reportedly resigned as the General Secretary of OUR Party, fueling speculations that he might be going for the top job. It said the new government prefers Oti because of his profound understanding of the Standing Orders of the National Parliament of Solomon Islands and the National Constitution. First runner up in the Ngella constituency, Johnly Hatimoana, will launch the petition.

Petition Looms for MPs Mr Hatimoana told SIBC News he has a "very strong case against the MP Elect-Mark Kemakeza." The petition includes claims of vote buying and people who had voted against names of dead people. MPs Must Avoid Conflicts of Interest: TSI

Transparency Solomon Islands (TSI) supports the call by the Chairperson of the Leadership Code Commission (LCC), Emmanuel Kouhota, that leaders, particularly Members of Parliament, must avoid putting themselves in situations that give rise to conflicts of interest.

"Where a political leader is in such a position, it will be interpreted negatively by the general public as a compromise to the principles of good leadership," TSI said in a statement. "As stated by the chairperson of the LCC, a conflict of interest situation may arise in cases where the public perceives it as such, regardless of whether it is actual or not."
